Background
The group met in the Ottawa punk/indie music scene, and have either shared stages or played in each other's bands for years.
We honed our skills as members of bands such as
Jimmy George,
SuperManchu, and the Patsies.
At the end of 2006
Morgan and
Joel
decided it was time to stop procrastinating and work together. They recruited
Tim and
grrreg and
the Bible All-Stars started playing around Ottawa. The first disc was recorded a month later.
The (self-titled) debut was recorded and produced by the band in grrreg's
dank, post-modern basement in May of 2007 and informally released in July of that year.
It was an effortless but addictive recording. We think it's honest and
gritty, with a sound that references country, rockabilly, psychobilly and punk.
Recently Joel was replaced on bass by Mike "Spike" Lawson, another former Jimmy George and Patsies bandmate.
press stuff
We've (collectively!) played Canada, the US, New Zealand and the UK and shared bills with a bunch of bands including
Wesley Willis,
the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy,
5440,
the Grapes of Wrath,
Tupelo ChainSex,
Tav Falco, and
Spirit of the West.
The first CD explores the darker side of life, exposing real fragility and imperfection
and creating along the way the perfect soundtrack to a wine-soaked night of
self-exploration. The 13 tracks on the album are at the same time dissimilar
and compatible and never forget to incorporate an eclectic list of influences
that include:
Hank Williams,
the Blue Sky Boys,
Johnny Cash,
the UK Subs,
the Louvin Brothers,
Mojo Nixon,
Social Distortion,
the Dead Kennedys and
the Carter Family.
The second release ("Pretty Down There") continued the DIY approach the band has used from the beginning, and was also recorded at grrreg's place. It reflects
a little more of the faster side of the band, while still fusing country, punk and rockabilly.
This was not put out as a CD - instead, it was released as a digital download from the band's site, with limited
copies available on thumb drives at shows.
